I have just been reading some of the comments. I believe Andrea does fantastic work. Please consider helping Companions for Life continue their work by donating towards the upkeep of these lovely dogs. The money charged by rescue shelters for their rescue dogs seldom covers the real cost of rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming them.
Suzanne Yasmin - It is my belief that Andrea is doing the world plenty of favours! By charging a reasonable amount for a wonderful pet she is stopping morons like you from adopting them which can only be a good thing. Grow up and live in the real world, idiots like you shouldn't be allowed to have pets anyway! BTW - Andrea, keep up the good work, our lovely Beagle Cross Casey we rescued from you just over 2 years ago is just great - would've paid double the price if I had too! ;-D
When someting is "free", people tend not to place any value on it! In reality, $400 is a very modest charge. As for $1,000 a year for a dogs total up-keep!!! For a large size dog, $1,000 would only cover the costs of heartworming/ worming and flea treatment for a year. As for vets bills, our beloved Lily ( a rescue greyhound) who was savagely attacked by another dog whilst we were out on a walk, her 4 days of intensive vet care, operations, medication, hours and hours of one on one vet care cost almost $8,000 - and sadly she didnt make it. We would have paid as much as it cost to have saved/ keep her. We have already rescued another dumped greyhound. All our pets were previously someone's elses and then "thrown away", and if I could save a 100 dogs and 100 cats I would.
we adopted Meeka in November and would like to let you know that she's exceeded all expectations. she fits in perfectly with our family. is well trained and we love her unconditionally and it seems the feeling is mutual. we couldn't live without her now. we love maremmas. we've created a flickr account where we will upload photos of meeka from time to time if you want to check it out and see how she is going: http://www.flickr.com/photos/meeka_maremma/
suzanne yasmin , What a silly thing you are ! , when people pay a just price for animal it ensures that they are dedicated to caring for the animal , also these beautiful people look after as many as 50 dogs at a time , they pay for the dogs vacinations the dogs desexing and the dogs food , also as they are in a cold climate they have heated floors to keeps the dogs warm ! this is a standard price for a dog and it is LESS than what it has cost these amazing people to care for them , you are a thoughtless greedy cow . IRENE
I just wanted to say - love your work! My family have had Maremma's for over 15 years, guarding our menagerie, family & property. We also have & have had many domestic & shepherd dogs - but the Maremma's are the family favourite - we love their attitude! Regarding the criticisms on earlier posts - $400 is nothing to pay for a tried & trusted guardian dog - regardless of the age. Our dogs have saved us much more than that in one year guarding our livestock from predators. When my fencing is complete & I am ready to stock my new property, I will be definitely visiting for adoption!
In response to Suzanne. Two years ago my mother, who has always had animals in her life, lost her most loved dog. She grieved so badly that I was seriously worried about her health and suggested that she get another dog. She felt she was too old to take on a puppy, and was told about the Petrescue site, so we started looking for a new dog for her. We found a dear little 7 year old Maltese cross who was with Andrea, so we picked her up and she is now as dear to my mum as her last dog. Even if she only has Honey for another 4 or 5 years, she's made Mum's life complete and Mum knows she can take on another dog and give them a really good life, even if the dog hasn't had their whole life with her. I'm all for Andrea charging the amount that she does. Not only does she have to cover her costs, but the price also means she's only getting genuine buyers for her rescued animals, not people buying a pet on a whim. Keep up the good work Andrea.
In response to Ms.Yasmin, Unless you know what you are talking about,I suggest that you keep your comments to yourself. If you havent been to Andreas home and seen all the dogs and cats that she looks after, then look before you comment. You are trouble with a capital T. We got a 4 year old Maremma,we paid the full amount for her and she is worth every cent. I suggest that you stick your head back in the sand. asdfe....you are an idiot.
I found a couple of dogs on your site, I would love to give a loving homes to. Prepared to spend $l,000 per year feeding grooming and vet bills etc to make their stay with me a happy and comfortabe one. How do you think you are helping these poor animals by charging $300 & $400 per dog. Its unfair on everyone - so you would prefer to have them put down rather than help them have a good home. If I were and I am not going to pay $300 to $400 for a dog I would'nt be getting one eight years old. Your not doing anyone any favours.
Give me a call and have a chat about your new family member!
